The 407 area code is Orlando and Central Florida — Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, plus small portions of Lake and Volusia. It shares that territory with two overlays: 321, the Space Coast’s countdown code, and 689, in service since June 4, 2019.
Most of the people who dial 407 have never lived a day inside it. When the world books a vacation, this code is on the other end of the call — theme-park reservation lines, resort front desks, convention operations, and the vacation-rental industry that surrounds them. That identity draws travelers, and it draws the scammers who imitate them.
Is 407 just Orlando?
Orlando anchors the code, but 407 covers the whole metro: Kissimmee and St. Cloud in Osceola County, Sanford, Altamonte Springs, and Oviedo in Seminole, plus Winter Park, Apopka, and the tourism corridor running southwest through Lake Buena Vista and Celebration. Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and the Orange County Convention Center all answer on this code.
The other Orlando is easy to miss behind the castle. The University of Central Florida — one of the largest universities in the country by enrollment — feeds a modeling-and-simulation cluster in east Orlando, and Lake Nona’s Medical City has pulled hospitals and health-tech into the southeast quadrant. 407 traffic is resort bookings and defense contracts.
1988: Central Florida leaves 305
Every Florida code descends from 305, which covered the entire state in 1947. By the 1980s Miami’s code was running dry, and on April 16, 1988, the new 407 took Central Florida — and more. The original 407 ran down the Atlantic coast to the Broward County line, covering the Space Coast, the Treasure Coast, and the Palm Beaches in one sprawling code.

321: the code that counts down
Relief came next as an overlay: area code 321 entered service on November 1, 1999. The digits were no accident — Space Coast advocates petitioned for the countdown sequence, 3-2-1, as a tribute to the launches at Cape Canaveral, and NANPA assigned it to the region.
The arrangement that settled in is one of the odder ones in the numbering plan. Brevard County — the Space Coast itself — uses 321 exclusively, and the Florida Public Service Commission excluded it from later Orlando-area relief. In metro Orlando, meanwhile, 321 remains layered over 407’s three-county core. Same three digits, two different jobs.
The dialing rules split the same way. Metro Orlando has dialed ten digits since the overlay era began, while Brevard kept seven-digit local dialing until the nationwide 988 transition: 321 was one of 82 codes with 988 in use as a prefix, so ten-digit dialing became mandatory there on October 24, 2021 under NANPA Planning Letter PL-556.
689: the overlay seventeen years in the making
Here’s a Central Florida quirk: 689 was announced for the region back in 2002, when 407’s number supply first looked shaky. Then number pooling and conservation measures stretched the existing inventory so effectively that regulators shelved the overlay — for seventeen years.
The reprieve ran out in the late 2010s. The Florida PSC approved implementation, and 689 entered service on June 4, 2019 across the same footprint: Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties plus the served slices of Lake and Volusia — but not Brevard. Existing numbers kept their codes; 689 simply fills new demand as 407 prefixes deplete. A 689 number is an Orlando-area number on a newer line, nothing more.
Screening 407 calls: the vacation-scam problem
A code that millions associate with booking travel is a costume worth stealing. Fraudsters spoof 407 numbers to pose as resort reservation desks, timeshare-exit companies, and ticket sellers — because a Central Florida caller ID makes a “confirm your booking” or “discounted park tickets” pitch feel plausible to someone mid-planning.
The defense is the same everywhere: the displayed number proves exactly nothing, because caller ID spoofing forges it outright. Book through official channels, and if a caller claims to be your hotel or timeshare company, hang up and call back on the number from your confirmation email. A legitimate 407 caller survives that check every time.
