Twilio voice: two products, one billing rule
Twilio voice is really two products with two prices. Programmable Voice is the API product: about $0.014 per minute outbound and $0.0085 inbound, with every call controlled by your code. Elastic SIP Trunking is plain connectivity for a PBX, SBC, or dialer: $0.0100 per minute outbound on standard US routes and $0.0034 inbound to local numbers.
The gap between those prices is the platform layer. If your calls need TwiML logic, recordings by API, or webhook control, you are buying Programmable Voice. If they just need to reach the phone network, trunking is the cheaper Twilio product for the job.
Watch the route exceptions. Alaska termination runs $0.0862 per minute, and designated high-cost areas run $0.0620 — run your dialing list’s area codes against those exceptions before trusting the penny rate. Toll-free inbound carries its own $0.0130 per-minute rate, a steep premium over the $0.0034 local figure.
One rule spans both products: Twilio meters voice on the 60/60 clock, so every call is billed as at least a full minute and rounds up to whole minutes from there. Telnyx voice billing works the same way. Short calls carry a higher effective rate than any headline number suggests, and dialer traffic is mostly short calls.
SMS and voice, product line by product line
The voice lanes mirror each other. Telnyx Call Control is the Programmable Voice rival: a $0.002-per-minute leg fee layered on top of trunking rates. Underneath it, Telnyx SIP trunking lists termination from $0.005 per minute and origination from $0.0032, against Twilio’s $0.0100 and $0.0034. Same architecture, lower floors.

Neither list price is the delivered price. US A2P 10DLC registration applies on both platforms — as of mid-2026, a $4.50 one-time brand registration plus typically $10 per month per campaign — and carrier surcharges of roughly $0.0035 to $0.0045 per outbound SMS segment stack on top. Those pass-throughs hit both vendors alike, so the per-segment floor remains the honest comparison line.
Call quality: routes and codecs
Both companies run serious networks, so treat sweeping quality claims with care. Telnyx’s argument is route ownership: its own carrier network in 40+ countries instead of brokering minutes across third-party routes. That yields steadier audio and latency than brokers that re-shop every call for the cheapest path. Twilio’s argument is scale: deep carrier links under a platform that hundreds of thousands of customers run on.
Two things usually move your call quality more than the vendor’s logo. The first is the network path from your server to the vendor’s edge. Latency, jitter, and packet loss on that path cause most audio complaints, and that path is yours, not theirs. The second is the codec you offer. G.711u is uncompressed 64 kbps audio with a MOS baseline of 4.4 — landline-grade sound and the cleanest signal for answering machine detection. Support and response times
Support on both platforms is tiered, and faster response targets are something you buy. Twilio’s base experience is docs, community forums, and ticket queues; paid premium support tiers cost extra. Telnyx works the same way: standard support is self-serve, while larger commitments unlock round-the-clock coverage and a named account contact. Published response-time targets change, so verify current plan terms on each vendor’s site before you sign.
No tier includes voice-operations expertise. A ticket about VICIdial codec settings is unlikely to get dialer-specific help on either platform, because neither support team is built around dialer operators. Where each one wins
Choose Twilio when the surrounding platform is the product: Flex for a customizable contact center, Verify for 2FA, or Segment and SendGrid already in the stack. It’s also the pick for a team that values the deepest docs and the largest pool of developers who already know the API.
Choose Telnyx when the workload is connectivity-shaped: numbers at fleet scale (volume tiers to $0.25), international voice where network ownership shows up in audio quality, or SMS at half the per-message floor. It suits a team comfortable with a leaner ecosystem in exchange for much better unit economics.
Choose neither when the workload is a dialer. A predictive dialer or VICIdial cluster pushing high-volume outbound uses no programmable layer from either vendor. It needs raw termination, answer-rate management, and an operator relationship. Both platforms serve that traffic through self-serve rate cards, 60/60 voice billing, and support tiers built for API-era customers.
A direct carrier prices and manages that traffic as what it is — starting with 12/6 dialer billing: a 12-second minimum, then 6-second increments, against the platforms’ full-minute rounding.
