936 Area Code: Texas’s Seven-Digit Holdout

The 936 area code stretches across the Texas Piney Woods — Conroe, Huntsville, Nacogdoches, Lufkin, and the pine-belt towns running north of Houston toward the Louisiana line — created February 19, 2000, in a three-way split of area code 409. It has never been overlaid, its number supply is projected to last into the 2060s, and it is one of only five Texas area codes where a local call still connects with seven digits.

That last item is the real story. Texas gave up seven-digit dialing metro by metro — overlays forced ten digits on Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio, and the 988 transition later converted seven of the standalone codes. 936 kept the old habit, and NANPA’s own projections say it can keep it for a long time yet.

Three splits deep on Houston’s family tree

Trace a 936 number backward and you land in 1947 Houston. 713 was one of the four codes Texas received when the numbering map was first drawn; in November 1982 it shed its eastern flank to the new 409, and by the late 1990s that code was in turn running short. NANPA’s NPA database records the chain plainly: 713 is the parent of 409, and 409 is the parent of 936 — three generations in fifty-three years.

The final cut is NANPA Planning Letter PL-201, dated December 6, 1999. The Public Utility Commission of Texas had approved a three-way geographic split: the Golden Triangle and the Galveston coast — Beaumont, Galveston, Port Arthur, Texas City — kept 409; the Brazos Valley — Bryan, College Station, Lake Jackson — became 979; and the timber towns took 936, with Conroe, Huntsville, Lufkin, and Nacogdoches named on the letter’s city list alongside Center, Crockett, Diboll, Liberty, and Navasota.

The mechanics ran on a precise clock. The split took effect at 12:01 a.m. Central time on February 19, 2000, opening a permissive window in which 409 and 936 both completed calls to the same phones. At 12:01 a.m. on August 5, 2000, the window closed and wrong-code calls went to intercept recordings. Carriers even got a rehearsal line: test number 936-438-8378 went live on January 19, 2000, a month early, so every network could prove its routing before the cutover.

Where seven digits still connect

Because no second code shares its map, a local call inside 936 still needs only seven digits. NANPA’s NPA database lists the code’s home local dialing at seven digits to this day, with 1 plus ten digits for toll calls — the same plan PL-201 spelled out at birth. Seven-digit dialing ends when an overlay arrives — the mechanics of splits and overlays are unpacked in our area code guide — and 936 has never had one.

The other national force that ended seven-digit dialing skipped this code too. Ahead of the 988 crisis line, NANPA coordinated the 2021 wave of ten-digit conversions in Planning Letters PL-544 and PL-556. Parent code 409 was swept up — its database entry now carries both letters and dials ten digits — but 936’s entry cites only PL-201, the letter that created it. Nothing since has touched its dialing plan.

The result, straight from NANPA’s current data: five Texas codes still dial seven digits locally — 325, 432, 956, 979, and 936. Numbers to spare until 2067

An area code’s health is measured in prefixes, and 936’s ledger is unusually comfortable. The April 2026 NPA Exhaust Analysis puts exhaust in the fourth quarter of 2067 — and the date is receding, not approaching: eleven quarters later than the previous forecast, a shift the analysis attributes to reduced historical and projected demand. NANPA’s database carries neither a jeopardy flag nor an open relief project for the code.

That calm is striking given what sits at the code’s southern end. The Census Bureau’s May 25, 2017 estimates release named Conroe the fastest-growing large city in the United States — 7.8 percent in a single year, more than eleven times the national rate. Montgomery County has kept absorbing Houston’s northward sprawl since, yet the code carries the load without strain, with decades of inventory still on the shelf.

Pine-belt digits as a credential

The caller mix is distinctly East Texas. Huntsville houses Sam Houston State University and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice — the state prison system answers its own phones on a 936 number. Nacogdoches, which bills itself the oldest town in Texas, anchors the northeast alongside Lufkin’s industrial base, while Conroe’s construction, retail, and healthcare boom dominates the south. Universities, county offices, hospitals, and mills make up the code’s daily traffic.

For a business selling into that corridor, the area code itself is a credential. A Houston number reads as out-of-town in Lufkin; a 936 shows up as hometown everywhere from Conroe to Center — and answer rates follow, an effect the local presence dialing explainer breaks down.
