805 Area Code: California's Central Coast Number

The 805 area code is California’s Central Coast — Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties, from Thousand Oaks and Oxnard up the coast through Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. Carved out of Los Angeles’s territory in 1957, it has shared its footprint with the 820 overlay since June 2018.

There is a beer named for this code. Firestone Walker, the Paso Robles brewery, calls its flagship blonde ale simply 805, because “the 805” is shorthand for the tri-county coast itself — printed on T-shirts and surf decals, poured from taps. That identity took seven decades and two major numbering events to form.

Where the 805 area code works

805 and 820 cover most of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, plus small corners of Monterey and Kern. The city list runs from San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, and Grover Beach in the north through Santa Maria, Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang, Goleta, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria to Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Camarillo, Ojai, Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Moorpark in the south — ending at Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, the last stops before the San Fernando Valley’s 818.

Who dials from it gives the code its range: rocket launches out of Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc, Amgen — one of the world’s largest biotechs — headquartered in Thousand Oaks, the Navy’s deep-water port at Port Hueneme, Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara, and the tasting rooms of Paso Robles and the Santa Ynez Valley. Agriculture, tourism, defense, and biotech all answer on the same three digits.

1957: carved out of Los Angeles’s code

805 arrived in 1957, split from 213 — the original 1947 code that once blanketed Southern California. The new code took the coastal counties north and west of Los Angeles, and its early footprint was far larger than today’s: it ran inland across Kern County to Bakersfield and took in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys in the northern reaches of Los Angeles County.

For four decades that mixed identity held — beach towns, oil fields, and high desert on one code. Growth ended it, the way our guide to how area codes work describes: when a code nears exhaustion, regulators either split the territory or stack a new code on top.

1999: the split that made 805 purely coastal

By the late 1990s the 805 was running short — the code had been declared in jeopardy, with number-conservation measures in force since 1997 — and the CPUC ordered a geographic split in Decision 97-11-080. At 2:00 a.m. on February 13, 1999, the eastern portion became area code 661: Bakersfield and most of Kern County, along with Santa Clarita, Palmdale, and Lancaster. Permissive dialing, when both codes still connected, ran until August 14, 1999. NANPA planning letter PL-NANP-111 drew the boundary.

What remained is the 805 people mean today: the coastal tri-county region, no inland detour. The split is why Bakersfield — an 805 city for four decades — answers on 661 now.

820: the overlay over the coast

When prefixes ran low a second time, the CPUC chose stacking over splitting: Decision 17-05-019 of May 25, 2017 approved an all-services overlay. Under NANPA planning letter PL-509, permissive 1+10-digit dialing began December 1, 2017, ten-digit dialing became mandatory on June 2, 2018, and area code 820 entered service on June 30, 2018 — identical footprint, identical rate centers, identical localness.

Overlay mechanics apply as they do everywhere: nobody’s 805 number changed, and 820 fills new demand as 805 prefixes deplete. An 820 number is simply a newer Central Coast line. The stack is also built to last — NANPA’s October 2025 exhaust analysis projects the combined 805/820 pool won’t run out until around 2070, so no third code is on the horizon.

The code that became a brand

Overlay or not, “the 805” remains the region’s name for itself in a way few codes match — Miami’s 305 is the natural comparison. The digits sell beer, apparel, and bumper stickers, and locals kept saying “805” even after 820 arrived. For anyone calling into the region, that loyalty is the point: a Central Coast number reads as from here to the person deciding whether to pick up.

The flip side of a trusted code is that spoofers borrow it. A displayed 805 or 820 proves nothing on its own — caller ID can be forged — so the callback habit applies on the Central Coast as everywhere: verify an unexpected caller on a number you look up, never the one that just rang you.
