The 773 area code wraps nearly all of the City of Chicago — every neighborhood outside the downtown core — plus O’Hare and Midway international airports. It went live on October 12, 1996, when Illinois split the city itself in two, leaving the Loop on 312 and handing 773 everything else. Since November 7, 2009, the same streets have also answered on the 872 overlay.
Ten zones out of eleven
NANPA’s overlay rate-center map, attached to Planning Letter PL-390, carves Chicago into eleven numbered zones. Zone 01 — downtown — belongs to 312. The other ten are 773, and the planning letter adds the detail the map understates: 773 also serves O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport, the two front doors most visitors use to enter the city.
That geometry inverts the usual enclave story. 312 is the famous survivor, but it is a hole in a much larger doughnut: 773 wraps it completely, touching the lakefront, the city limits, and every neighborhood in between. By land, by population, by almost any measure except office towers, the code of Chicago is 773.
Born on a leap day, live by October
The Illinois Commerce Commission’s chronology of area-code relief records an exhaust notice for 312 in August 1995 — the whole city was burning through one code’s prefixes. The remedy on file (industry notification letters IL-96-02-014 and IL-96-06-003, filed in NANPA’s planning-letter record) did something rarer than the usual city-versus-suburbs divorce: it cut the city itself along a rate-center line. The suburbs had already decamped to 708 back in 1989.
NANPA’s NPA database dates the new code’s assignment to February 29, 1996 — a number born on a leap day — with in-service following on October 12, 1996. Downtown kept the 1947 original; the neighborhoods, the airports, and most of the map got 773.
The overlay wired to an odometer
The next fix was ordered while 773 was still young. On June 30, 1999, the ICC approved an all-services overlay for 312 and 773 in Docket No. 98-0847, and NANPA assigned 872 on July 23, 1999 — announced that October in Planning Letter PL-195 alongside sibling overlays 464 (for 708) and 331 (for 630).
Then came the unusual part. The commission ordered thousand-block number pooling first, as a conservation measure, and barred NANPA from issuing a single 872 prefix until the existing codes had assigned every prefix they had. No launch calendar, no target year. Most overlays arrive on a schedule; this one was wired to an odometer, and the odometer took a decade to roll over.
July 9, 2009: the last prefix leaves the shelf
Planning Letter PL-390 (June 15, 2009) called it: 773’s supply of NXX prefixes would run out between the second and fourth quarters of 2009. On June 25, NANPA formally notified the ICC that exactly three prefixes remained. On July 9, 2009, the last available 773 prefix was assigned — the cupboard was empty.
That tripped the wire. The first 872 prefix was assigned on August 7, 2009, starting a ninety-day permissive window, and Planning Letter PL-392 fixed the finale: at 12:01 a.m. Central on November 7, 2009, 1 plus ten-digit dialing became mandatory and the first 872 numbers could switch on. Carriers verified routing against a test number NANPA published for the occasion — 872‑872‑1872, live from October 14 through December 7, 2009.
Dialing rules and the long runway
Every local call in Chicago has been dialed in full since that morning in 2009 — NANPA’s database lists 1 + ten digits for every call type across 312, 773, and 872. The early conversion aged well: when the 988 crisis line forced 82 seven-digit holdouts to convert in 2021, Planning Letter PL-556 listed Illinois’s 309, 618, and 708 — and no Chicago code, because Chicago had already dialed this way for twelve years.
Supply is equally unhurried now. NANPA’s April 2026 NRUF exhaust analysis dates the 773/872 complex’s exhaust to the fourth quarter of 2046, with 312/872 stretching to 2049 — the shared 872 pool is modeled under both city complexes — and the database records neither jeopardy nor relief activity. The code that once ran to its literal last prefix now has two decades of headroom.
What 773 says on a caller ID
For a business dialing Chicago, the two city codes carry different accents: 312 reads as a downtown tower, 773 as the neighborhoods where most Chicagoans actually pick up the phone. That familiarity is the whole engine of local-presence calling — a local code earns answers a distant one never sees. When was the 773 area code created?

Why did the 872 overlay of 773 take a decade to launch?
Because Illinois tied it to an odometer, not a calendar. The ICC approved the overlay in Docket 98-0847 in June 1999 and NANPA assigned 872 that July, but the order required thousand-block number pooling first and forbade any 872 prefix until the existing codes had assigned every prefix they held. Do calls to 773 numbers require ten-digit dialing?
Yes — and they have for longer than most of the country. Planning Letter PL-392 set mandatory 1 plus ten-digit dialing across 312, 773, and 872 from 12:01 a.m. Central on November 7, 2009, when the overlay entered service. That head start is why no Chicago code appears in PL-556, the 2021 letter that converted 82 seven-digit codes ahead of the 988 launch; Illinois’s entries were 309, 618, and 708.
Is the 773 area code short on numbers?
The prefix pool assigned directly under 773 ran out in July 2009 — that exhaustion is what activated 872. But as a combined complex the supply is healthy: NANPA’s April 2026 NRUF analysis projects 773/872 exhaust in the fourth quarter of 2046, with jeopardy never invoked and nothing further planned. New Chicago numbers simply draw from 872 stock.
Can a business outside Illinois get a 773 number?
It can. A number’s home is its rate center, never a street address, so a company anywhere in the US can carry Chicago digits and receive the calls over SIP.
